Golden berries, also known as Cape Gooseberries, Incan Berries, Ground Berries, and Pichu Berries (that’s a lot of names isn’t it?) are small bright yellow to orange fruits that grow in sunny and warm climates. Golden berries taste rather sweet when fresh, however, after being dried their flavor becomes tangier and tarter. Another cool and surprising fact is that these berries are related to tomatillo. However, keep in mind that it is not the same berry as your classic Gooseberry.
Fresh Berries have a very short shelf life, therefore a dried option is much more convenient and allows you to enjoy these delicious fruits whenever you want. Firstly, fresh berries are carefully washed. Secondly, they are disinfected, and finally, dried by forced air, followed by manual selection.
Dried Golden Berries have extremely versatile uses. You can snack on them straight from the bag or add them to trail mixes, sprinkle over your oatmeal, granola, and fruit salads. Pastry Chefs often use Dried Goldenberries in their baking recipes since they have a very distinct flavor that perfectly complements other sweet ingredients. These small berries are also added to jams and sauces.
Dried Golden Berry is a powerhouse of beneficial nutrients. When comparing fresh and dried fruits, 100g of fresh Incan berries contain 1.9 g of protein, while 100g of dried ones contain 3g. As for the Vitamins, there are 11mg of Vitamin C in 100g of Raw Golden berries vs. 21.5 mg in Dried Cape Gooseberries. Moreover, Golden berries are a great source of Vitamin A, Calcium, Iron, and Potassium. These little fruits may promote bone health, boost your immune system, and improve your vision.
If you were lucky enough to get a package of dried Cape Gooseberry, don’t forget that they should be stored in a cool dry place, away from direct sunlight and odorous material. You may store the berries in original Food to Live resealable bags or in a container that has an airtight lid. The product should be kept in temperatures of 59°F - 89°F (15°C - 32°C) with relative humidity < 70%.
