It’s difficult to imagine a more universal food than rice. This product takes popularity all over the world, as its usage is endless in both – savory and sweet dishes. While we are used to eating a common Long Grain Rice variety, there is another beloved pantry staple that’s just as delicious but serves a whole different purpose, and that is – Short Grain Rice.
Food to Live’s Short Grain White Rice is a premium quality and Kosher product. Visually, these rice grains are wide, almost round, and can be easily distinguished among other varieties. A high level of starch present within this rice, makes its grains sticky and clumpy upon cooking. Such texture is perfect for making sushi rolls, thus sometimes it’s called Sushi Rice or Short Grain Sticky Rice.
The closest alternative to short grain white rice is Arborio rice. It has almost the same size, shape, and starch content as Short Grain White Rice. However, its firm and toothy center isn’t a great choice for sushi. To sum up – these two varieties are not always interchangeable in all recipes.
While Short Grain White Rice loses some nutrients after the bran and germ are removed, it definitely is not “empty”. White Sushi Rice is loaded with B vitamins and Iron. It is also considered to be a good source of Folate, Potassium, Phosphorus, and other essential microelements.
With its tender, creamy texture and subtle starchiness, Short Grain Rice is perfect for sushi and serves as a great basis for sticky rice, risotto, rice salads, and desserts. It can be used for stir-fries, creamy rice pudding, or as a side dish. You may top it with veggies, tofu, and sauces.
No matter where you cook short-grain rice: on the stovetop, in the instant pot or rice cooker, take Short Grain Rice and water in ratio to 1:2
Buy Short Grain Rice in bulk and pay less per pound. The best way is to store it in a cool dry place away from sunlight and humidity.
Traditional Japanese drinks – Shochu and Sake are produced from Short Grain White Rice.
